Shredding with Zeus-Splitboarding on Mt. Olympus

Splitboarding  on Mt Olympus was always a  challenge for us.

After finding the ideal  weather window  we met at  the  bottom of the “Petrostruga’’ trail  at  13.00  ready to go  with  about  of  20kg  of  gear  on our  backpacks.

Almost 4 hours later , with a couple of tea stops in between, we were  at the “Petrostruga refuge alt 2011m  where  Nectarios  served us some  delicious  pasta.

Not so early next morning  we strapped  on splits  and Chris  on his skis  and start our  next task  at the   trail  leading to Kakalos  refuge

Less than one hour later we changed the boards  to  grabons cause the  fast  trail  option we took was getting  too  steep and icy for  the splits.

Arriving  on  the  top before the “Laimos ridge” we can feel the magnificence of the place.

Passing “Laimos ridge” is a technical and mental challenge, facing the chaos on the north  face.

Almost one hour later our last steep climb next to the “Giosos pass”  and we finally enter the “Oropedio ton Mouson “ and  after awhile at  the “Kakalos refuge”  alt 2400 m.

where  our hosts Mihalis  & Thodoros  and the rest of the “The thing  about Greece “ and MX   crew  ( Themis,  Xaderfos,  & Billy ) welcome us with some ‘’raki’’ shots and few cool runs at the snow park around the refuge which they build just few hours ago. The sudden light snowfall was also welcome.

It was  kind of hard  climb but the unbelievable scenery worth every minute of that, and we did celebrate it proper later on.

Next day blue skies and astonished views,  when we start  splitboarding at the top of Toumpa.

The ride beyond the Stefani was fabulous and the snow conditions perfect.

After that,  Profitis Ilias was our next target.  Not so steep as Stefani, was good fun.

Late at night after a gorgeous dinner and few  extra glasses of wine we decide to have a night ride again at Profitis Ilias.  We hike up and ride down under the moonlight and the whole experience was one of a kind.

Next morning it was the departure day so after we clean and close the refuge, everyone packed with all the gear and follow our guide Mihalis for the big run down to “Prionia”

The first part was a nice and steep couloir and then some cool tree runs.

As we’re getting lower the snow conditions changed dramatically to slash ,  when we came down through “Gavorema’’ where at the end of it , a huge avalanche debris was still there to remind us how serious is this mountain ride.

After this great descent we pack our boards and start walking the“Gomarostali” trail one of the steepest trials I have ever tried,

straight to Prionia after almost 1 hour, where  some of the team enjoyed a really “cool’’ bath at the “Enipeas” lakes.

The whole trip was a lifetime experience and we set up an appointment with Mihalis  for next season.

Thanks to KAKALOS Refuge and the Gods for the hospitality

Big props to all the team:  Mihalis, Theodoros, Giannis, Xristos, Themis, Xaderfos, Sporos,Marios, Vasilis, Dimtris.
